Why Teach?

    Hello everyone. My name is Sydney Moore and I am a junior at Texas State University. My major is Early Childhood Education but it was not always this way. I used to be a nursing major. Before I had dreams of becoming a teacher I wanted to be doctor. This was what I thought I wanted to be from a very young age and I never thought of any other professions. I used to never like children but when I was in high school I started to babysit a lot and I even started an internship working with children in vacation bible school. This showed me the side of working with children that I never knew where you get to hear the different things that they think about and see how they develop their creativity. I started to really enjoy working with them and even contemplated the idea of teaching but in my mind teaching equaled being broke for the rest of my life so I brushed off the thought. I went into college wanting something more practical since I knew I would want a job after college and did not want to go to school forever, so I decided on Nursing instead of Pre-Med. I thought that I could do this and still find some way to work with children so I could still fulfill that passion to work with them. Things were going really well for me but I could not stop thinking about the feeling that I would get teaching children. Every time I would think about it it put a smile on my face. I would think about all the teachers that I had and how the good ones really inspired me and made such an impact on my life. I feel that teachers are so important in a child's life. Children spend most of their lives in the classroom so that time spent with them can shape their life in a good or bad way. Some of the teachers that I have had have done both but I wanted to be the one that impacts their life in a good way. I decided that I would listen to how I felt and changed my major to early childhood education at the beginning of sophomore year of college. Ever since I have felt like this is what I was meant to do.

    Because I am still learning and figuring myself out, I have preferences for what I want to teach but they still change from time to time. Right now I am leaning more towards teaching 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grade but at the same time I am willing to teach at any level. I do want to teach it all but I do have a little bit of a passion for history. If I find that I have the opportunity to focus more on teaching that, I would be open to that as well. I want to teach children what they need to know but overall I want to provide a safe space for my future students. I want them to feel like they can be who they are or even find out who they are in my classroom. I want to be someone that they can come to when they feel like they have no one. I want to be there for my future students in any way that they need.
